เพิ่ง จะ รู้

เคยไหมที่เราสามารถฟังบทสนทนาภาษาอังกฤษทั่วไปรู้เรื่อง

แต่เมื่อเพื่อน ๆ พูดคำ หรือ ประโยคแปลก ๆ เป็นมุกที่คนอื่นหัวเราะ

ขณะที่เรากลับไม่เข้าใจหากแปลตรง ๆ ตัวอักษร

และอาจจะแค่หัวเราะกลบเกลื่อนตามไป

จะพูด/ฟังภาษาอังกฤษให้ดูเหมือนเจ้าของภาษา

เมื่อเราใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน หรือจะไปเรียนต่ออังกฤษ

การมี Idioms (สำนวน ปนอยู่บ้างก็เป็นสิ่งที่ควรจะฝึกเอาไว้นะ

วันนี้เราเลยมีคำศัพท์ และสำนวน ง่าย ๆ ได้มาให้ลองฝึกใช้กัน

"A piece of cake" แปลว่า ง่ายมาก! หมูมาก!

ตัวอย่าง “My English exam today was a piece of cake for me!”

“ข้อสอบภาษาอังกฤษวันนี้ง่ายสำหรับฉันมาก"

"Not my cup of tea" แปลว่า ไม่สนใจ

ตัวอย่าง “Physics is never my cup of tea.”

“ฟิสิกส์ไม่เคยเป็นวิชาที่ฉันสนใจเลย”

เป็น Idioms สองตัวที่มีโอกาสใช้บ่อยมาก ๆ

Go bananas!

ไม่ได้แปลว่า ชวนไปทำอะไร ๆ เกี่ยวกับกล้วย

แต่ใช้ในความหมายว่า “โกรธหัวฟัดหัวเหวี่ยง สติแตก บ้าคลั่ง บ้าไปแล้ว”

ซึ่งเราสามารถใช้ be แทน go เป็น be bananas ได้

ตัวอย่าง “If he sees the room in this state, I’m sure he will go bananas.”

“ถ้าเขาเห็นห้องในสภาพนี้ล่ะก็ ฉันมั่นใจเลยว่าเขาคลั่งแน่ ๆ”

“Apple of someone's eye”

แปลว่า “คนที่เป็นที่รัก คนที่มีความสำคัญหรือ

เป็นแก้วตาดวงใจ” เอาไว้ใช้พูดกับคนรัก

ตัวอย่าง “You are the apple of my eyes.”

แปลว่า “คุณคือที่รักของฉัน ,แก้วตาดวงใจของฉัน”

“Don’t blow it!”

คำว่า Blow ตรงนี้ไม่ได้แปลว่า “เป่า” อย่างที่เราเข้าใจนะ

แต่ความหมายของ “Don’t blow it” คือ อย่าทำพัง ล่ะ, อย่าทำเสียงานล่ะ

ส่วนใหญ่จะใช้ในเรื่องของโอกาสที่ได้รับมา

ลองมาดูตัวอย่างประโยคง่ายๆ กัน

“This is your last chance, so don’t blow it!”

“นี่เป็นโอกาสสุดท้ายของคุณแล้วนะ เพราะฉะนั้นอย่าปล่อยให้โอกาสนี้หลุดลอยไป!”

หรือจะพูดแบบนี้ก็ได้เหมือนกันนะ

“I had a great opportunity, but I’ve just blown it.”

“ฉันได้รับโอกาสที่ดีมาก แต่กลับทำมันพัง”

และสุดท้าย

“Sleep on it” แปลว่า “ขอใช้เวลาในการ ตัดสินใจสักหน่อย”

ตัวอย่าง “I’ll get back to you tomorrow. I have to sleep on it.”

“ฉันขอเวลาตัดสินใจสักหน่อย แล้วจะบอกคำตอบพรุ่งนี้”

เชื่อว่าต้องเคยผ่านหูผ่านตามาบ้างสำหรับ สำนวนข้างต้น

At Rugby school Thailand, Sailing is one activity in many co-curricular activities we offer.

Sailing provides the students with the opportunity to get away from the daily classroom routine and experience adventure. No two days are the same on a boat and the children quickly learn to deal with challenges that they face. Sailing also gets them to use the skills that they learn every day at school in a new and unique environment, perhaps without them even realising.

Through sailing, the children learn to apply the academic knowledge they gain in the classroom in a unique setting with real life challenges. For example, our pupils can use geography to identify wind directions and look for patterns on the water; they are able to use mathematical angles to project an appropriate route through a sailing course. The sense of discipline that our pupils learn from sailing also enables them to succeed in a classroom environment, so you might say they were symbiotic.

 

Ben Collings, a class music teacher for the Pre-Prep and Prep schools, also teach one-to-one singing lessons to students in the Prep and Senior schools, as well as directing choirs, smaller instrumental ensembles, teaching music technology and coaching sailing.

He started sailing when he was about 10 years old, so roughly the age that children start learning to sail here at Rugby School Thailand. His family were inspired to join a sailing club back in the UK following a flotilla sailing holiday around the Ionian islands one summer. Within a year, He and his Dad were competing together at the Miracle Class national sailing championships.

โครงการแลกเปลี่ยนฯ (Exchange Student England)
